Introducing Kids to Data Protection: A Unique Approach in Guernsey

October 5, 2023

If you’ve ever wondered how to introduce the younger generation to the complex world of data protection, Guernsey has come up with a delightful solution.

A New Book on the Block

“Warro’s Data Adventure” isn’t just another children’s book. Specifically designed for eight-year-olds, this publication from The Office of the Data Protection Authority (ODPA) is making waves in the educational sector.

Why Data Protection Matters

In today’s digital age, understanding the significance of personal data is crucial. And what better way to introduce this concept than through a story? The book not only educates kids about the importance of personal data but also showcases its omnipresence in our daily lives.

A Word from the Expert

Emma Martins, the Data Protection Commissioner, sheds light on the book’s essence. “It’s not solely about the concerns, but also the potential benefits,” she says. Stressing the importance of knowing where our data ends up, Martins adds, “Our aim is to present this in a friendly manner. It’s not just about fearing the digital age but welcoming it.”

Meet the Characters

The story is centered around two intriguing characters: Warro, the data bear, and her friend, Bijou the blue tit. Fun fact: “Warro” means “Hi” in Guernsey’s native language, Guernésiais. As for Bijou, the blue tit is chosen for its symbolic representation of sharing information for the greater good of its species.

In Conclusion

Guernsey’s innovative approach to educating kids about data protection is commendable. Using relatable characters and a compelling narrative, “Warro’s Data Adventure” is sure to leave a lasting impact on its young readers.
